After teeth whitening, pain and discomfort are to be expected. Fortunately, these simple tips can help you relieve sensitivity caused by whitening treatment and enjoy your bright teeth comfortably.

1. Use toothpaste for sensitive teeth

If you experience sensitivity after a whitening treatment, you should switch to toothpaste for sensitive teeth. This type of toothpaste is specifically designed to prevent the spread of pains and aches at the nerve endings. The main ingredient is usually potassium nitrate which works by blocking the pain signals from your teeth to your brain.

2. Adjust your use of whitening gels

If you have sensitive teeth, it’s best to use a pain-numbing toothpaste with 5% potassium nitrate and fluoride 10 - 30 minutes before treatment. If your sensitivity is severe, you should pick a whitening gel whose carbamide concentration remains around 10 - 16% and not over 22% unless instructed by a dentist.

If you perform teeth whitening at home and suffer sensitivity, consider increasing the waiting time between each session so your teeth have time to recover. Besides, you shouldn’t wear the whitening tray longer than 3 hours, either.

3. Brush your teeth gently

brush your teeth every day

Brushing improperly or too violently may worsen sensitivity caused by teeth whitening. To prevent unnecessary damage to your teeth, opt for a toothbrush with soft bristles. Brush your teeth vertically, gently yet thoroughly to clean them well without causing damage.

4.Clean your teeth with natural ingredients

Mouthwashes with natural ingredients are effective at cleaning your teeth while also soothe your pains and aches. Here are some suggestions for you to try:

  • Rinsing with salt water: Salt has powerful antibacterial properties, making it a great reliever for toothaches. Mix a teaspoon of salt into 250 ml of warm water and rinse your mouth for 30 seconds.

  • Use honey as a mouthwash: Honey is another natural antibacterial agent that is great at reducing swelling, pains, and aches. You may dilute 2 teaspoons of honey in 300 ml of warm water to make your own mouthwash.

  • Swish with green tea: Not only does green tea possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but it also works well to improve overall dental health. Use green tea (no sugar added, of course) as a mouthwash twice every day to relieve pains and aches.

5. Tackle sensitivity with garlic

Garlic contains allicin, a pain-relieving and antibacterial compound that protects your teeth from environmental triggers, relieving toothaches. It works wonders and doesn’t take much time at all.

You just need to cut garlic into thin slices and rub them directly on your teeth for 3 minutes and rinse your mouth with clean water. Do this 3 times every day to reduce sensitivity fast.

6. Choose appropriate foods

As soon as you notice any pain ỏ ache, you should limit your consumption of acidic foods and beverages such as carbonated drinks, alcohol products, fruit juices such as orange juice and grape juice, among others. Foods that are too hot or too cold are also not recommended as they may cause your teeth to be more prone to irritation.

It’s best to stick with soft foods such as porridge if you have trouble chewing. To further relieve pain, drink with a straw to reduce contact between your teeth and the beverage.

7. See your dentist

If various home remedies for tooth sensitivity have failed to help and your condition persists regardless, you should visit your dentist to seek timely treatment. Your dentist will trace back your previous whitening treatment to see where it went wrong. He or she will also apply medications to ease your pains and aches or perform other advanced dentistry procedures to help you.
